Every March, Peñíscola holds the Squilla mantis, shrimp, and rice 'Gastronomic Days'. For lovers of good food it's a date not to be missed in Peñíscola. This culinary event is bursting with the true flavours of the sea, with off-menu dishes and offerings that combine traditional recipes with new products, fusing contemporary techniques with age-old flavours.

Local chefs prepare special menus that cover a wide range of options. In this 10th edition we were delighted by Squilla mantis cooked and prepared in myriad ways, such as for example braised, in cream, with grilled vegetables, as carpaccio, as suquet, sautéed, in pastry, battered, with tartar sauce, in croquettes, in cannelloni with seaweed, seared, and even lacquered with

Mediterranean aromas: hints of citrus, honey, rosemary and thyme. Further, the rice served with the squilla came in varieties featuring octopus, broccoli, boletus, wild asparagus, shrimp, and artichokes; in broth, creamy, dry and "arrossejat" formats.
